For many years the National Soccer League (Later the Canadian National Soccer League) was the top league in Canada, with a history extending back to 1922. It was at times eclipsed by the various attempts to create nationwide leagues (The EPCSL, CSL, NASL, etc.). But it persevered until 1997 when it folded, to be replaced by the new Canadian Professional Soccer League, which hopes to one day be national in scope.
